1. The Massive Gap

Found Year: 1981 Found by: Robert Kirshner and associates. Where: Canes Venatici Scientists are still baffled by the interstellar mystery known as the Giant Void. The Giant Void is not a space hole, nor is it filled with dark matter or matter. It simply isn't anything. The Giant Void admits light, however scientists think that light carries dark energy in it.

With an estimated diameter of 1.3 billion light years, it occupies a significant area of the Canes Venatici. It is fitting that the Giant Void is frequently called "The Great Nothing."

2. Dark Matter

Found Year: 1998 It was discovered by Adam Riess, Brian Schmidt, and Saul Permutter. Location: All around the place Only five percent of the cosmos is made up of the familiar, non-dark matter that we know and love. Dark matter and, to a lesser extent, dark energy comprise most of the cosmos. Dark energy makes up two thirds of the environment we live in in space. Since its discovery in the late 1990s, scientists have been baffled by it.

The first indications of dark energy came from measurements of supernovae. In 2002, additional proof was obtained from a study of 250,000 galaxies and gravitational lensing data.
